The GMC first meet of 2021, coming out of lockdown and being together proved to be an absolute breath of fresh air for all involved. We met in the gorgeous old limestone built village of Worth Matravers. The sun was out, the wind was slight the sky was blue and lined with light wispy streaks of cloud. The sea was calm, the shoreline clear.  We could see for miles…. What a treat, how lucky we were!

We split off into smaller groups, the decision for many of us was a need to get back to basics on sport routes having been out of training for a good while, on account of the pandemic. Some were on harder climbs. Rope work, techniques, equipment all discussed and of course, checked, double checked. A few new bits of climbing bling being admired and tried out. It was great to meet some new members, catch up with old and familiar members, mix ourselves up as much as the restrictions would allow and get back onto the rock face.

Single pitches were the order of the day and happy we were with that, realising how much some of us just needed to practice basic moves and techniques, it was a shock to the system and hands down, we were pretty exhausted at the end of it. Some personal achievements were gained.

I think many of us will agree in saying not only was the day pretty perfect for a good climb, we belly laughed a lot and thoroughly enjoyed being alongside each other doing what we all love. The day was brilliantly topped off with a pie and pint at the local pub.

Here’s to a great start to GMC 2021!
