Do you like being part of an active and welcoming mountaineering club? Do you enjoy helping out and making stuff happen? Do you have the ability to veer off a meeting’s agenda item and start a long rambling discussion on the arcane points of Victorian animal husbandry? If so, there are opportunities for you with the GMC Committee and we need you!
At last year’s AGM there was a certain amount of discussion (and indeed a change to the constitution) about committee roles and how to get new blood into the system. We have not forgotten. In addition to the meets secretary role (which, due to JP’s uber-busyness at work, is now being shared out), there are a number of committee people who are thinking about standing down at the end of the year. Therefore we want you to start thinking about stepping forward.
There will be a number of roles available, most of which are easily do-able even if you don’t have much climbing experience. In fact, the committee has a long history of muddling its way through each year, learning on the job and helping each other out! The commitment does not need to be big, with some roles more involved than others. As we approach the end of the year it’ll be clearer about exactly what gaps there will be; at the moment it is about generating interest so that the club can continue to function.
There is a list of traditional roles and responsibilities here, and the current committee will be only too happy to answer any questions you have. You can also easily post questions by replying to this article, so feel free to question, challenge and abuse us here too…
We have also started having the meetings themselves in the Waterside Centre in the open on a Monday evening every six weeks or so. You are very welcome to come, listen in and find out what it’s all about. No promises on Victorian animal husbandry though, as the digression changes every meeting.
Anyway, get thinking about what might be and whether you can put something back in. The club only works because of volunteer effort and it is (in my few years of experience) rewarding to be a part of that.
You haven’t heard the last of this!
